On April 15th, 2003, Well Water came into existence in the city of Rotterdam. It was founded by Michel Rijkaart and Bas Westdijk. They have been best friends ever since they were Small Business students in Haarlem. Well Water is about selling bottled water in order to support clean drinking water projects. Under the name ‘Well’ and based on a “water for water” concept, Well Water is the first brand dedicated to bottled water (in fact across the world) to embrace cause related marketing. The company’s mission is to create value by being a source of inspiration.
Well, mission accomplished because today many companies have either directly or indirectly linked a good cause to their products. Unfortunately, some companies have decided to seek inspiration by copying our concept. Surely Well Water has been offering clients “the real thing”.
Until the beginning of 2015, Well Water has supported a charity known as Simavi, providing tens of thousands of people with clean drinking water. In 2016 our concept changed into “good for the next generation”. It is how we maintain our mission, taking the next step. Sustainable entrepreneurship is about offering products that serve the world and the future generations. And so Well Water is investing to help the nature of society recover. By building green areas, cleaning the North Sea and supporting local charity, Well Water is at the heart of the future. Socially improving entrepreneurship is the road every company should follow in the end.
In 2001, Bas Westdijk came up with the idea to apply cause related marketing. At the time, he was a marketing expert working at a private bank called MeesPierson. In early 2000 he became familiar with corporate social responsibility. He resigned in May 2002 to dedicate himself to cause related marketing. In October of the same year, during a three-month journey across Eastern Europe and heading towards the Middle East, he came across a National Geographic article in one of Damascus’s hotel lobbies discussing drinking water. It put him on the right track. A few months later he was back in the Netherlands, sharing his ideas with Michel. Soon, Well Water was borne.
Well Water has some very loyal customers, including nature shops and catering companies like Sodexo. In fact, our water is even served in both chambers of the Dutch Parliament. We are very proud of that.
